Mark Wallace, Head Guide
Te Anau based, Mark is a member of the New Zealand professional Fishing Guides Association and offers intimate knowledge of the upper Waiau river and other well-stocked local rivers. A keen angler since he was 13, Mark has grown up exploring Southland and Fiordland in search of those one-of-a-kind trout fishing experiences.
Mark loves the Waiau for its abundance of hard-fighting trout and for its secret fishing spots, often only accessible by jet boat. Mark shares his home with Christine and two trainee fishing guides, Morgan and Zane. Turning his passion for fishing into his profession, Mark founded the Fiordland Outdoors Company with Christine to offer visitors one-of-a-kind Fiordland adventures.
For local Southlander Ken Mitchell, fishing and getting out on the water has always been a priority. Ken grew up amongst the great outdoors on a farm in Gore, and is one of the most quintessentially kiwi blokes out there. Having worked as a deer culler, truck driver, fencer, farm labourer and Paua Diver, Ken knows Fiordland’s and Southland’s landscapes like the back of his hand.
Now an expert fishing guide and jet boat driver, Ken lives in Te Anau with his wife Pam. He’s a great guy to spend the day with – keen anglers will love his dry wit, kiwi knowledge and innate understanding of where the fishing action is on the Waiau.
True-blue kiwi and new guide Dion Halmshaw is so keen on Fiordland trout fishing, he even heads out on the Waiau on his days off! Passionate about all things hunting, fishing and jet boating, Dion’s varied background includes working as a rescue diver, as a ski patrol for Coronet Peak and as a jet boat driver in Skipper’s Canyon, Queenstown.
“Our guide Dion was fantastic in every way – he put me on fish all day, and was extremely patient to get my stroke right as I hadn’t fished in a while. He was also great at keeping my wife engaged in the trip, even though she doesn’t fish much”.
Dion is a true professional, and the kind of guy you’ll love spending time with out on the river. We’re lucky to have him as part of the team!
